"In general, crystals and stones used for healing are used in a variety of ways…They are worn on the body as pendents, rings, etc.; carried on the person in pockets, mojo bags, and such; used as healing pendulums suspended above the affected areas; placed directly on the affected body part or placed on the appropriate chakra; and sometimes they are used to create healing tinctures that are taken internally, applied to affected body areas, or sprayed around a space..."

It's All About Poppets

witch2.jpg picture by witch_of_endore

It's all about Poppets this month. When you purchase them from my website, they are charged and ready to go-- all that's left is for you to add a 'personal' touch with a photo, a lock of hair, a signature, etc. But did you know that there is a ritual to 'breathe them to life'? Well there is, and I'm passing it on to you. It would be preferable to work this magic within a cast circle:

Assemble those items that correspond to the four elements-- a bowl of water, a lit candle, an incense of your choice, and a bowl of salt.

1. Cast your circle & call the quarters.

2. Have your altar prepared, the color of your altar cloth, the herbs and stones present all corresponding to your intentions.

3. Upon this altar place the items belonging to the elements.

4. Take a few moments to ground yourself, to gather your energy, to fill your mind and this magical space with your intentions for this poppet.

5. Lay the doll upon the altar.

For the element of Earth:

Take a handful of salt and sprinkle it across the figure, saying, "I infuse you with Earth, that you feel physical touch."

For the element of Air:

Take the doll in your hands and hold it in the smoke of the incense, turning it, moving it, that it is consumed with the smoke, saying, "I infuse you with Air, that you think."

For the element of Fire:

Lay the doll upon the altar once more and hold the burning candle above it, saying, "I infuse you with Fire, that your passion be unquenchable and you feel the heat of my fury (or love, hate, etc.)"

For the element of Water:

Dip your right hand into the bowl of water and sprinkle the water upon the poppet as it lay on your altar, saying, "I infuse you with Water, that your emotions be overwhelming."

6. Leave the poppet lay on the altar. Take a deep breath and slowly lean over it, until you hover above it's mouth, your own lips almost touching it. Exhale now, allow your breath to escape from your body in one long warm draught of air. And this breath shall enter the poppet and give it life.

7. Open your circle, dismiss the quarters. Do with the poppet what you must, according to your intentions.

An online reading...

tarot15.jpg picture by Amythyst1

Below is an actual tarot reading for one of my clients:

1. Your husband’s job…
The Wheel of Fortune
The Fool ® 2/pentacles King/swords ®

It looks as though a change is coming, and it could be a change that turns things topsy turvy, at least for a while. (Note: spinning and cutting come to mind, weaving, as well as objects of a circular nature.)
The Fool generally sees us on a journey, whether a physical journey, or something new which we’re beginning…a new path, which reinforces our first card. This man either has an angel on his shoulder, or he has someone behind him from whom he draws support. It also appears that with this change will come greater financial balance. Also, the idea of “killing two birds with one stone” and “a bird in the hand is worth two in the bush”, comes to mind-- this seems strange, even to me. I don’t know if there is a literal connection somehow to birds, or these cliques will have something to do with your husband’s employment in a figurative way.

The King of swords is a proud man who sometimes tends to take life too seriously. It would be to his benefit to look at the lighter side from time to time. Laughter reduces stress. (Note: I got the impression that this King needs some down time and that stress might be a factor in his future in some way.)

2. Your third grandchild…
Temperance ®
The Hermit 8/wands ® 8/pentacles

This will be a child of balance, patience, and determination; someone with fortitude who doesn’t give up easily, but keeps plugging away until the desired goal is reached.

This is also a solitary child, someone who isn’t afraid of being alone, but rather, gathers strength and maintains serenity by actively seeking ‘quiet time’. She (or he) will not act swiftly, will not in fact do much of anything quickly, but will have more of a slow and plodding nature about them.. They will certainly not be impulsive. Don’t become frustrated when you want something done quickly and it isn’t, ‘cause this child is going to do things in their own good time on their terms.

This individual will know, from a very early age, what their lifework is, and may begin an apprenticeship/training in this field at a very early age, possibly in the late teens/early twenties.
(Note: I don’t know where I get the ‘they’ from, but since it came on its own accord, I’ll leave it as is.) falldivider.gif picture by witch_of_endore

3. General Reading
The Chariot
Princess/cups 3/cups Knight/cups

First, is someone getting married? If the aren’t right now, they will be in the future.
I felt, with the first group of cards that your husband’s change of employment would involve: 1) a move, 2) travel, 3) a long commute; and this concept is enforced here with The Chariot. Someone is going somewhere.

The Knight of cups brings to mind the story of the frog and the princess, Sir Lancelot, and the idea of dark water, totally disconnected thoughts…this is what happens when you use the intuitive method of reading the cards. If any of this doesn’t make sense to you now, it probably will in the future.

Also, autumn comes to mind, perhaps in relation to a time element for some of these events to play out. Actually, I feel that autumn is going to be very significant to you in some way. And I also feel as though water plays some significant role here as well-- this could be actual physical water; such as a lake, river, creek, pond, etc.; or it could involve the element of water; which includes such things as emotions, dreams, intuition, the west, the color blue, and Mondays. It looks as though everyone is going to have their hands full, when it rains, it pours, as the old saying goes.
falldivider.gif picture by witch_of_endore

*About the reading: The 'they' in this particular reading came from the fact that I was not only picking up the unborn child, I was picking up a parent as well. As the mother told me, it was 'freaky', and I had it down pat, even to the apprenticeship.

The bond and connection between parent & child is the strongest of all human bonds. Remember this when you're doing readings, just as in this case-- when reading for one, you very likely will pick up the nuance of both.

Pagan Holiday:
October 31
Samhain (pronounced 'Sou-wen') is a celebration that has a more somber side than the revelry of modern Halloween. It is a day of remembrance of your ancestors and for those family members who have passed over.

Pagan families may set an extra place at the supper table on this evening, to honor those loved ones who are no longer with them. The veil between the world of the living and the dead is thinnest on this eve, and this night is an excellent time to perform divination, or try to connect with those from the other side.

Herbs: patchouli, sage, heather
Altar Flowers/Herbs: acorns, apples, pumpkins/gourds, dittany, autumn leaves
Feast Foods: pumpkin, squash, nut breads, sweet potatoes, milled drinks (cider, wine), roast meat, root vegetables
Animals: bats, cats, crows, ravens, owls
Incense: cinnamon, cloves, myrrh, patchouli, pine, mugwort, nutmeg
Rituals/Spells: making besoms, divination, spirit contact, crone magick, working with dark energy, spells for new beginnings

Crafting Your Magic:

Ancestral magic is cast with the Blood Moon. Do magic now to communicate with family members who have passed, to connect with your ancestors and your heritage. Magic surrounding divination is relevant, it’s the perfect time. Cast spells for justice and balance, and to overthrow anything oppressive which may be blocking your path to success. Ambition is highlighted, use magic to increase the potency of your own, or cast magic to contain ambition that may have run amok. This is also the perfect time to step into the dark shadows and take advantage of the vibrations found there. The gray witch revels in the magic of the Blood Moon and in this season.

Magickal Herbs

HERBALPICTURES.jpg picture by witch_of_endore
In the tradition of Samhain, we're going to look at herbs used to call up spirits.
To bring forth protective & benevolent spirits, Mugwort is burned on charcoal with star anise, althea, and resin incenses like frankincense, myrrh, copal, or benzoin.
Energy: feminine/receptive
Planet: Venus
Element: Earth
Powers: strength, psychic powers, protection, prophetic dreams, healing, astral projection
falldivider.gif picture by witch_of_endore
The root, when dried, roasted, and ground like coffee, is used to make a tea. This infusion will promote psychic powers. This same tea, steaming and placed beside the bed, will call spirits.
Gender: masculine/projective
Planet: Jupiter
Element: Air
Powers: divination, wishes, calling spirits
falldivider.gif picture by witch_of_endore
To call Spirits, place some thistle in boiling water. Remove from heat and lie or sit beside it. As the steam rises call the spirits and listen carefully; they may answer your questions.
Gender: masculine/projective
Planet: Mars
Element: Fire
Powers: strength, protection, healing, exorcism, hex-breaking
falldivider.gif picture by witch_of_endore
Wormwood is burned to summon spirits. It is sometimes mixed with sandalwood for this purpose. If burned in graveyards the spirits of the dead will rise and speak, according to old grimoires.
Gender: masculine/projective
Planet: Mars
Element: Fire
Powers: psychic powers, protection, love, calling spirits
falldivider.gif picture by witch_of_endore
Burn sweetgrass to attract good spirits, or beings, before performing spells.
(Strangely enough, I couldn't find any correspondences listed for sweetgrass, other than it's power to call in spirits.)
Never ingest any herbs, or feed them to someone else, if you are not absolutely sure they are safe!

 Kitchen Wytchery

As the Kitchen Witch knows, natural magick can be found in certain foods, recipes, as well as herbs. In this section we're going to put this knowledge to work.

Witches-Kitchenbymagic_art.jpg icon kitchen witch picture by witch_of_endore

We celebrate Samhain at our house big time. I'm going to include in this newsletter my own recipe for pumpkin pie & my 'secret' recipe for the large pot of hot apple cider that is a tradition at our house. The photos included are family photos of Samhains past.

My Pumpkin Pie:
1 16 oz. can pumpkin (about 2 cups)
1 13 oz. can evaporated milk (but sometimes I use sweetened condensed milk-- it makes it more 'chiffony' that a word?)
2 eggs 1/2 cup brown sugar 1/2 sugar
the spices:
Cinnamon, ginger, nutmeg, allspice, cloves, and a dash of salt. Most recipes call for 1/2 teaspoon each, but I'm much more generous with my spices!
the crust:

I tried for years to learn to make a good pie crust, and I almost gave up out of frustration-- then I found this recipe. It's almost foolproof, no kidding.

2 and 1/2 cups flour 1 teaspoon salt 1 cup shortening 1 beaten egg 1 tablespoon vinegar 1/4 cup water
Mix the dry ingredients together and cut in the shortening, as usual. Then combine the egg and vinegar, stirring it up a bit, and add this to your dry ingredients. Add the water a dash at a time as you work it in, you'll be able to tell when you get a good texture.

Hot Apple Cider

I have a *Huge*-- did I say huge?-- kettle that I use to mix up my cider. This sits and simmers all afternoon on the backburner of my stove, wafting a wonderful aroma throughout the house.

5-7 large jugs of applejuice 8-10 bags of peach tea a handful of cinnamon sticks and a large metal tea ball filled with whole cloves and allspice

You can leave a shaker of nutmeg sit on the counter & anyone who wants to add a dash of this spice to their mug of apple cider can do so.  If you don't like this cider full force, you can dilute it some with water to suit your own taste.

myworldsamhainpreparations.jpg picture by Amythyst1

Our kitchen isn't as organized as Rachel Ray's or Martha Stewart's, but we get the job done. Above are kettles of cider brewing in preparation for a Samhain evening.falldivider.gif picture by witch_of_endore

Let's take a look at the ingredients we just used from a magickal perspective:

Peaches-- love

Nutmeg-- one of the most popular uses for nutmeg is to assure fidelity. It's also used for spells centered around luck, money, and health.

Cinnamon-- spirituality, success, healing, power, psychic powers, lust, protection, love

Allspice-- money, luck, healing

Cloves-- protection, exorcism, love, money

Apple-- love, healing, garden magic, immortality

Happy Samhain!!
